Emily Soto: In the Studio with the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens

3

Fashion photographer Emily Soto is known for her dreamy, elegant portraiture so we thought she’d be a perfect candidate to test the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens. The ethereal look achieved here was created with the help of Alyssa Lorraine, who did the hair and makeup, and model Joanna Bajena.

In the this interview, Soto talks about her experience using Lomography’s versatile new lens to create striking editorial images.

Please tell us about your photography. How long have you been doing it? What is the pull of photography?

I am a fashion photographer and love capturing images in an artistic, painterly way. I have been shooting with many different film and digital cameras since 2010. My work has a bit of a romantic, mysterious feel and I love how the tools I use help to achieve my vision.

This lens has a fascinating history, so let’s play the association game. What came to mind when you first saw the Daguerreotype Art Lens? What is special about its build?

It has a beautiful antique soft look which reminds me of an old 8×10 lens that I shot with in Paris.

What did you take pictures of? What camera did you use?

I shot a model I found really unique. I loved her soft features and thought her look would match that of the artistic lens. I used Canon 5D Mark III.

Why use a special lens at all?

It gives a unique feel that is difficult to achieve with a standard lens. I personally love shooting in an artistic, painterly way and unique lenses give my images the mood I am looking for.

Let’s get technical. What tip would you give to a first-time user?

I use the Live View with zoom focusing on my DSLR to see a bit clearer. I’ve found this helpful with focusing.
