Ti Kouka/Cabbage trees. Capt. Cook used the leaves as soup/vegetable food for his crew to avert scurvy due to Vitamin C deficiency

    I don't think they knew of Vitamin C, but they must have known some correlation between the soup of this plant and the prevention of scurvy. It's like cured olives-what it must of took to figure how to make something edible though there is no clear reason to pursue such a course.
