It was the 1st of January early in the morning. The just opened the frozen lake for the public. It was black frozen, which does not happen often. Sometimes you could see the ground beneath you. The best was the sound – the lake was singing and the big walls around it reflected not only the light beautifully but also the song of the lake.
What I love about the old sites of Chernobyl and DUGA III is the little elements of technology and propaganda. How symbolic is it, when display of the world in the HQ of Duga, which was suppose to be be iluminated, when rockets were launched, is now collapsed on the ground. And I have to give praise to the LCA 120 once again, it's always ready to shoot, and especially indoors with little light and time it is a great choice to capture what is hardly to be seen on film...
life in a polar station is regulated by work. Their are busy days and lazy days, mostly due to the weatherconditions. On one day tension was up, because besides the daily meteo sonde and a ozon sonde there was also a CFH Sonde send up a balloon into the sky. CFH stands for Cyrogenic Frostpoint Hygrometer, it detecs the moisture in the stratosphere. This sucker is used only every three months, so if the wind is too strong this means trouble. https://vimeo.com/149264575 And at least there was light inside thescience hut. Shooting outside in darkness forces you to use ultralong exposure, up to 5 minutes or to use a flash, which only works for a few meters. But I tried it anyway...
the island of marajo is famous for their bulls. the bull cheese is supposed to be a delicatessa and you see them pulling carriages. on our last day we kind of witnessed some sort of bull-race on the beach, with firecrackers for the starting signal. I tried to get close to the action and didn't regret it...
