The Colors of Cross-Processing - Sample Shots for many Slide Films by mephisto19

55

How often have you asked yourself “how did these colors came out”? So here is a try to sort some samples by colors and film brands, but only a short overview and based on the labs I used and m scaner, as results are totally different in other countries!

Okay… So here is a try of giving an overview of different colors after cross processing slide films.
First I should shortly explain what cross process (or xpro or x-pro) means:
You cross/ change the chemicals you need to develop the films, so if you have a slidefilm (Diapositivefilm) that should be developed E6 you develop it in chemicals for colornegativefilms (C41). Depending on the brand of film and the ISO you can gain light or extreme color shifts.

To gain a light green (I always compare it to spring) I like to use Fuji Sensia 200 (Fuji RM). If you use it in daylight, the green will be light, decent, nice and if you use the film indoors, you will get a darker, stronger green (depending on the light conditions)
This films is also great to capture red and blue skies. If you overexpose the film you will get yellow results.

So here are some samples for Fuji Sensia 200

Fuji Sensia 200 Light Green

Fuji Sensia 200 Dark Green
Fuji Sensia 200 Yellow
Fuji Sensia 200 Blue
Fuji Sensia 200 Red

There is a 400 ISO version of Fuji Sensia getting almost the same colors as the 200 ISO film

Fuji Sensia 400

Another green film is Kodak Elite Chrome (Kodak EB) 100, but the variety of color is quiet high, too, so overexposing leads to yellowish tones, sometimes you can capture beautiful blues and on some shots red pops out extremely.
The thing is that using this film under german light conditions, I tend to overexpose it one step anyways to get colored results. Otherwise the shoots look very grey.

Kodak Elite Chrome 100

To give an extra-boost of color, Kodak has invented the Kodak Elite Chrome ExtraColor (Kodak EBX) 100. It is like the EB, but with richer colors. Mostly green. o if you want rich green shots, use that film.

Kodak EBX 100 – Elite Chrome ExtraColor

You can gain strong and rich colors, too, by using Kodak E100VS. Green, yellow (when over exposed), blue, popping out red…

Here is a sapmle of regular exposure time

and a longer exposure

Another film withgreenish results is Kodak EPP. I only had expired films, so no guarantee at all ;)

Kodak EPP

So let us now get to strong blue. the bluest blue you can get and outstanding red. Agfa CT Precisa 100.

Agfa CT Precisa 100

Light blue, oilpainting-like results you can get by using a rare film: kodak EDUPE (3 ISO), a duplicating slide film.

Kodak EDUPE

This film is compareable to Tungsten films (64T), which give cold blue results.

To have red or even pink results, you should try Fuji Sensia 100. Sometimes is changes to orange or purple.

Fuji Sensia 100

The Sensia 100 is the same as Voigtländer Chrome 100, so the results are similar:

Voigtländer Chrome 100

A film that come out yellow or blueish ( I still have not figured out, why it is like this) is Konica Centuria Chrome 200. maybe because I only have expired films, so you never know…

Konica Centuria Chrome 200

Kodak EliteChrome 200 gets blue- turqouise results.

kodak Elite Chrome 200

Fuji RAP 100F (Fuji Astia) gives you red-orange results.

Fuji RAP 100F

Another red-orange film is Fuji Velvia 100 (RVP). But the results even shift into purple sometimes…

And of course there are the two lomoslide film made by lomography. One with 100 asa, that is compareable to Agfa CT Precisa

Lomography Slidefilm 100

and the 200 ISO version of Lomoslide:

Lomography Slidefilm 200

There are many, many more slidefilms. You can get rare ones, expired ones, famous ones, unknown,… Just try and enjoy not to know beforhand, what will really come out. But I hope you have now an idea of the results might look…
So now it is your turn to try slidefilms and cross processing. Enjoy!

impressive! also worth to notice that the color tint (and more) may vary from scanner to scanner, from lab to lab - _especially_ when it's about the x-pro, since then there is actually no a singe color scheme which is right :)

Congrats Stephan, what a great review of colors! A good guide to use x-pro films! And we know also that it can sometimes be very surprising in some light conditions with surprising unexpected colors... and I can also add that if you're using slide (to be x-processed) in strong sunlight (that's often my case) you should underexpose the film one stop, so you get a stronger vignetting and very deep colors...

Great article and gallery! Outstanding work. But the most important thing you said in "no guarantees." I have been keeping records of the color range other Lomographers get with different films and my head just spins from all of the variables. And, I guess that's the beauty of xpro--you just never know.

Thanks a lot for this overview-
I've been searching for something like this, when i decided to try out x-pro and i couldn't decide which film i should try.
I was a bit surprised, when i picked up my first developed fuji sensia 100 yesterday, that the images were more pink than yellow. But i think, the surprises are one thing, that makes cross processing so much fun :)

Its good that internet exists but one always has to be critical. To info. This is a post meant from the goodness of you ...no doubt. But it dosent hold up one bit for the following three films: First you dont mention how and what you scan your positives with . The one and only way to truely see whats on the developed positive is to scan a raw positive and invert it in photoshop and i dont think you did that. So if that is correct the exampels above is not the true colors of true crossprocessing of every individual film but only the true colors of your scanner software settings. I was very influenced and inspiried by this very same article and started shooting kodak. E100g which to my great dissapointment yields overall cyan/green colors ( never got the colors you mention above and ive shot 4 rolls now and crossprocessed in c41 tetenal - yes i can come close when i set the colorbalance to autolevels in vuescan software...but then again thats exactly NOT what we want ...to let it auto balance out the colors. Because then the software is trying to even out the true crossprocessed colors on the positive which in this case is cyan/ green!!!! )the same holds true for fuji velvia 50, as for the agfa prcisia 100 it gets horrible green cast . So the conclusion is for now. If you let your scanner software determin the output you might as well shoot digital and tweek curves for crossprocessed look. Plenty of the films you mention above is no longer avaliable but i plan to shoot the provia 100 and the fuji velvia 100 and 100f and post the results here. So infact crossprocessing dosent in itself yield that much different unpredicted results rather its the scanner software that does and it also apply for professional labs . How did you scan your positives by the way?
