My First Lomo Affair: Jmcedo and his LC-A+

Joan Manel Cedó is an avid fan of extreme sports. He has been a rock climber for two decades and has also gained interest in kitesurfing over the years. In both sports, he tries to incorporate his passion for photography. In this instalment of My First Lomo Affair, he talks about how he chance upon the carefree style of shooting with the LC-A+ and all the adventures that followed this discovery.

Please tell us more about yourself and what you do.

I am 39 years old. I work as a firefighter at the Barcelona Airport. Also, I am studying osteopathy and I just finished my second year recently. My hobbies are related with sports. I have been a rock climber for 20 years. I also do kitesurfing and I combine both sports during my free time. I also like traveling and having a good time everywhere. In all these things, I always carry my Lomo cameras because photography is also my hobby.

When was your first try of a Lomography camera or film? What product was it?

I tried film 20 years ago with a compact camera and after sometime, I jumped to an SLR camera, a Nikon F80. My first try with a Lomography camera was in June 2009, when I bought my first LC-A+.

Was the Lomography product yours or did you borrow it from a relative or friend?

I learned about Lomography over 15 years ago or more in a new TV program in Catalan television called “Silenci?”. They made a report about Lomography, about the LC-A and its pictures that we all know. That ten-minute TV Show influenced me to know about Lomography. But living in a village with no internet connection I wasn’t able to get more information, so I put my dream in a box until June 2009. Then, my memory made a rewind and I looked up Lomography on the internet. You even have your own webpage! I got impressed and I did my first step: Buy my brand new weapon, the LC-A+.

How was the experience? Any funny or strange occurrences?

Shooting with the LC-A+ is like having the best possible way to capture the world around. With it, I can be close to my subjects without intimidating them. I am able to shot without thinking and I only look in front of me and shoot everything that catches my eyes. I always carry my camera with me in a small waist bag. It’s very convenient especially when I see something that deserves to be captured quickly because I can get the camera easily and shoot. This makes all situations look funny because the angle of my shot is totally unpredictable and the results become more interesting. Depending on the film used, the final result, most of the time, is totally impressive.

Have you used that Lomography product again? Why or why not?

I always use my LC-a+, even when I already have a Sprocket Rocket, La Sardina and Supersampler.

These are my favorites because for the first time I was glad to shoot without thinking, only watching the world and capturing what I like.

How did it affect your love for Lomography/film photography?

My love for Lomography started with the first roll. Since then, I always carry any Lomo camera with me. I shot everything that appears in sight and that deserves a picture. Doesn’t matter how, when, or who, being a lomographer makes me shoot whatever I see, because there is nothing more beautiful than to capture what you live for and convert it in an image that has the power to revive and refresh your memory, make you smile, and sometimes, stirs emotions in different ways. With Lomography, I’ve been able to be close to people and my subjects. I’ve been able to take shots in so many angles and in so many ways that weren’t possible before with other cameras or another styles to shoot. My love for this kind of photography is alive and I hope I can keep for a long time.
