LomoGuru of the Week: Koduckgirl

14

An on and off relationship with analogue photography delayed her joining in our Lomographic Community. But when she has finally decided to shoot — for forever — with her vintage film cameras, she has also decided to stay!

This girl from the sunny city of San Francisco in USA is definitely a LomoGuru counting the years that she has been toying with various analogue cameras. To thousands of lovely analogue photographs, to a collection of film cameras, and a bunch of LomoFriends, this week’s LomoGuru is someone to look out for! Come and greet this lady, koduckgirl!

Lomography Username: koduckgirl
Location: San Francisco, California USA
Number of years as a Lomographer: On and off since 1978. As a kid I owned a Konica and loved family photos but it really hit me when my Dad gave me a Nikon FE in 1982 and at one point I came across a field of abandoned Packards in CT and I had to be dragged away from it.
Number of years in the Community: One, fully. Though back in 2004 I was introduced to Lomo cameras and briefly went on the site, I got into digital [photography] for years and then last year I got back into it full blast with the advent of the new Lomography Gallery Store in San Francisco.

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

Koduckgirl has been my username for almost ten years starting with Flickr. It was inspired by my love of MAD Magazine and Kodak. It came from the MAD Magazine Wacky Pack Sticker Koduck-Film for Ducks and I added the girl on the end and wallah — koduckgirl! From then it has stuck!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

I had the opportunity to be part of a group show at the Lomography Gallery Store (LGS) in San Francisco, California last August. It was amazing and it was my first show at 48 [years old.] I just started getting involved with analogue again after many years of digital [photography] and I was really excited at discovering film again. And the LGS people were fantastically encouraging especially J-Rad.

Some of koduckgirl’s most popular Lomographs.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

Yes, kind of. They are mostly online but I must admit that I love the Lomo community. I consider some of them definitely to be friends like Joe at the San Francisco LGS, thoughtlesshero, some of my film swap friends like giovannidecarlo, rik041, furn7978 and others like ediblestrange and j-rad.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Oh yes! As long as there is film and something to shoot with (and a way to share it online even if the internet dies, haha!) I will shoot until I am too old to shoot and I would have to be quite senile to not to be able to shoot photos! Having been in love with cameras and photos since I was very young.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

Considering that I have 30+ cameras, this might actually be the hardest question. Haha! But… I love the Lubitel 166+ because it is very manual and plastic and versatile with the Lubiken. Though I am getting the Zenit 122K soon and by the looks of the samples that might become a fast favorite especially when I get the Fisheye lens for it! I also really love my Hasselblad 500 C/M.

Sure an experience with the Lubitel!

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

Now, this is probably the hardest part of this questionnaire. Haha. But I will put a couple shots. The first one is from an abandoned field of Packards and was the epithany in 1982 that made me realize I had the photo bug because I literally could have stayed there for hours and hours shooting!

This is from last year when I was really getting back into analogue photography. I took this with my new LC-Wide with a twist — I had the half frame switched on but the lens open to full frame so it took multi frame overlapping shots. It is also my most popular shot and the first time I have experienced a photo blowing up on the Lomography site. It rekindled my love for multiple exposures.

This is a collaboration of multiple exposures with my friend Peter. It had a surprising success that blew us both away and brought us together at the same time with the magic of analogue!

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

Okay, another crazy hard question to answer but this is the shot I wish I had taken because it is an amazing shot — building, film tone, and sharpness taken by "bloomchen"http://www.lomography.com/homes/bloomchen with a Belair 6×12 camera. It is a shot that is inspiring and a fantastic building as well I wish I were there! And if I were, I would go crazy on this building!

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

I did a Tipster on how to take double exposures with a Polaroid Spectra, here.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Take photos ALL the time — stealthily, and be free! Don’t think if the photo is good or not because it is!

Do you think you’re qualified as a LomoGuru? Got something to share in our Community? Then drop me a line at mayee.gonzales@lomography.com qne become the next LomoGuru!
